The problem it solves

Owning one of these machines means answering the same handful of questions repeatedly, in a different order every time, with no manual and no catalogue. What is it. What size is that part. What was done to it. Why will it not run. What do I order.

This is the whole library's argument in one document. Everything inside it is free individually and always will be; the pack exists because somebody setting up a folder for a newly acquired machine would rather press print once than fifteen times.

It is ordered as ownership actually goes. Identification first, because every other answer depends on it and because the badge on the bodywork is the weakest evidence the machine carries. Then the true-size measuring sheets, which are the part a screen cannot replace. Then the records, which turn a machine with no history into one with a history. Then the two diagnostic chains that cover most no-starts, and the fault log that makes every other diagnosis better. Then the pre-order checklist, because that is where the money goes.

It is not a service manual. It contains no torque figures, no valve clearances, no jetting and no wiring colour chart, because published values for these machines contradict each other and a wrong number in a printed document does more harm than an absent one. What it does is establish what you actually have, measure it, record it, and narrow a fault to something you have observed.

The mistakes this sheet exists to prevent

• Printing it at "fit to page", which shrinks every true-size scale by about six per cent and quietly corrupts every measurement taken from it.
• Filing it indoors. It is for the place the machine is.
• Filling in the identification pages and then never using them when ordering.
• Treating it as a service manual. It deliberately contains no specification figures.
• Binning old parts before measuring them, which is the one instruction that recurs throughout.

How to use it

1. 01Print at actual size and check a calibration rule with a steel rule before measuring anything.
2. 02Fill in the identification sheets first, once, and keep them at the front.
3. 03Keep the whole pack with the machine rather than in the house.
4. 04Fill in the records as you go. They are worth real money when you sell.
