How to decode an engine family number, character by character

The code printed on your emission label looks like a serial number. It is not. Four separate facts about your machine are encoded in it, and once you can read them you can identify a machine with no badge, no paperwork and no importer left to ask.

Every powersports vehicle legally sold in the United States carries an emission control information label, and on that label is an engine family number. It is the single most precise identifier your machine has — more reliable than the badge, which the importer chose, and more specific than the VIN, which identifies the vehicle rather than the engine.

The structure below was derived by testing it against every China-engine row in the EPA database — 6,004 rows carrying 4,858 distinct certificates — rather than taken from a specification document. Where the fit is not perfect, that is said plainly.

A worked example

Take a real code from the register: VGSCC.278RAE. It breaks into five parts.

So without seeing the machine, that code tells you it is a 2027-model-year, street-legal, 278cc scooter sold by Genuine Scooters. Cross-referencing the register adds the part the code does not carry: which factory in China actually built the engine.

Character 1: the model year

The first character is the model year, and the mapping is exact. Across every China-engine record in the database, no character maps to two different years.

Characters 2 to 4: who certified it

The next three characters identify the company that holds the certificate — the American importer, not the Chinese factory. In the database this is exact: 345 distinct three-character codes map to 345 distinct certificate holders, with no code shared between two companies.

They are often mnemonic once you know what you are looking at:

  • GSC — Genuine Scooters
  • KYM — KYMCO USA
  • PVM — Piaggio Group Americas
  • KTX — KTM North America
  • WMI — Wansen Motor

This is the character group that matters most when a machine has lost its badges. If you can read three characters of the code you can find the importer, and from the importer you can reach the factory.

Character 5: road or off-road

The fifth character records which certification programme the machine went through, and in practice it is a two-way split:

  • C — a highway motorcycle. Street-legal, titled, plated.
  • X — off-road: ATVs, UTVs and off-highway motorcycles.

This is worth checking against what you actually own. A machine certified X was never approved for road use in the United States, whatever the seller told you, and that affects both registration and which parts catalogue applies.

The decimal point: engine size in litres

This is the part most people miss. That full stop in the middle of the code is a decimal point, and the digits around it give the engine displacement in litres.

VGSCC.278RAE is 0.278 litres — a 278cc engine. VKTXC0.80SVP is 0.80 litres — a 799cc engine. The zero before the point is not padding; it is the whole-litre digit.

Tested across the register, this reading holds for 98% of records. The exceptions are almost all rounding: a code reading .250 against a measured 229cc or 234cc engine, because the importer certified to the nominal class size rather than the exact swept volume. So treat the number in the code as the size the machine is sold as, and the figure in the register as the size it actually measured.

What is left over

The remaining characters are the manufacturer's own sequence, distinguishing one engine family from another within the same year, importer and displacement. There is no public key to them and they are not worth trying to interpret. Use them only as part of the whole string when searching.

What the code will not tell you

It does not name the factory. The engine family number is issued to the importer. Two importers selling the identical machine, built on the same line, in the same week, will each hold a different engine family number. That is exactly why this registry exists — the link from importer to factory lives in a separate column of the certification record, and joining them up is the whole job.

It does not identify parts. An engine family is an emissions grouping. It tells you nothing about which supplier made the variator, the CDI unit or the brake shoes. Read why a shared engine is not a shared part number before you order anything.

You cannot use another brand's code to find a match. Because codes are per-importer, searching a rival brand's engine family will never return your machine. Work from the factory instead — that is what the shared-engine cohorts are for.

Common questions

My label has two codes on it. Which is the engine family?

Labels frequently carry both an engine family and an evaporative or permeation family. The engine family is the one containing a decimal point with digits either side of it in the pattern described above. The permeation family usually has no decimal point and often contains a word fragment like PMETAL.

The code on my machine is not in your search. Why?

Most often the machine was never certified for US sale — a great many small imports were not — or the label belongs to a model year outside the 2006 to 2027 range the EPA publishes in these two files. It is also worth re-reading the characters carefully: 8 and B, and 5 and S, are easy to confuse on a weathered label.

Can I work out the year if the label is unreadable?

Yes, from the VIN. Position 10 of a 17-character VIN is the model year, using the same alphabet that skips I, O, Q and U. How to read the rest of the VIN.
