The problem it solves
The badge on the bodywork is usually the least useful thing on the machine. It tells you who imported it, not who built it, and if that importer has since folded the name leads nowhere. The numbers stamped into the frame, the engine and the emission label are what parts suppliers, registries and DMVs actually work from — and they are scattered across five different places under the plastics.

How to use it
- 01Print one copy per machine. Both US Letter and A4 versions are provided.
- 02Work through it with the machine in front of you and a phone torch. Most of these numbers are under a panel or behind the legshield.
- 03Write the VIN one character per box. Transcription mistakes between 8/B, 5/S, 0/O and 1/I are the single most common reason a lookup fails.
- 04Photograph the completed sheet. That photo is the thing you send to a parts seller.
