The problem it solves
Maintenance on these machines is either done reactively, when something goes wrong, or obsessively for a few months and then not at all. Neither is deliberate. What is missing is a plan that fits on one page and can be pinned somewhere it will be seen.
The service log records what was done. This plans what is going to be. They are different documents and both are more useful than either alone, because a log tells you the past and a planner argues with you in the present.
It is built around seasons rather than months, because that is how these machines are actually used: ridden hard in summer, neglected in autumn, laid up or struggled with in winter, and recommissioned in spring. The jobs that matter cluster differently in each.
As with the service log, no intervals are printed. Sources for these machines disagree with each other, sometimes by a factor of two, so you set your own from your own manual or your own experience — and the sheet records which you used.
The mistakes this sheet exists to prevent
- Planning around a schedule found online, when published intervals for these machines contradict each other.
- Filing the plan indoors, where it will not be seen.
- Planning only the engine jobs and forgetting tyres, brakes, cables and the battery.
- Setting intervals so ambitious that the plan gets abandoned in March.
- Not ticking things off, so next year starts from guesswork again.
