Scooter runs then dies after a few minutes

It starts, runs beautifully, and stops. One free test finds the commonest cause, and almost nobody knows to do it.

The problem it solves

This fault gets diagnosed as ignition — a coil breaking down when hot, a CDI failing with temperature — because that is what "works then stops after ten minutes" sounds like. Parts get replaced, the symptom returns, and the actual cause is often a blocked breather hole in the fuel cap that costs nothing to clear.

As fuel leaves the tank, air has to replace it. If it cannot, a partial vacuum builds above the fuel and eventually holds it back. That takes a few minutes of running to develop, which is exactly the timing that makes people think of heat.

The test is free and definitive: when it dies, crack the fuel cap open. If it then restarts and runs, the tank was not venting. It is one of the most satisfying diagnoses available on these machines because it needs no tools, no parts and no meter.

Everything else on this sheet is what to check when the cap test comes back negative — the vacuum tap, the filter, the float bowl and, only then, the ignition side. The order matters: the free checks come first, and the expensive suspicion comes last.

The mistakes this sheet exists to prevent

  • Replacing a coil or CDI for a fault that appears after a few minutes, before doing the free cap test.
  • Testing the fuel tap with the engine off, when a vacuum tap only opens while the engine is turning.
  • Refitting the same fuel cap after clearing the vent without checking it actually vents now.
  • Assuming a full tank rules out fuel starvation. The vent problem is worst with a full tank.
  • Blowing through a fuel filter to test it, which can push debris backwards into the carburettor.

Who it is for

  • Anyone whose machine runs well and then stops after a predictable few minutes
  • Owners who have already replaced ignition parts with no improvement
  • Anyone whose machine restarts after standing for a while, then does it again

What is on it

  • The fuel cap vent test, which costs nothing and finds most cases
  • The vacuum tap check people get wrong
  • What to check when the cap test is negative
  • How to tell fuel starvation from a heat-related ignition fault

How to use it

  1. 01When it dies, crack the fuel cap before doing anything else. That is the whole test.
  2. 02Note how long it ran, and whether the time is consistent.
  3. 03Note whether it restarts immediately, after a few minutes, or not at all.
  4. 04Only move to the ignition side once the fuel side is genuinely eliminated.
