Scooter earth and ground connection checklist

A corroded earth produces the same symptoms as a dead ignition component, and costs nothing to fix. Check these before buying anything.

The problem it solves

Almost every expensive electrical misdiagnosis on these machines has a cheap earth fault underneath it. A corroded engine-to-frame strap will produce no spark, a dim headlight, a starter that only clicks and a battery that never charges — the exact symptoms that get blamed on the CDI, the stator and the regulator in turn.

Electricity has to get back. Every circuit on the machine returns through the frame, the engine and the strap between them, and those connections live outdoors, get wet, and are made between dissimilar metals that corrode where they touch.

The symptom of a bad earth is not "nothing works". It is that things work badly and intermittently, and that the fault seems to move around. That is why it gets misdiagnosed: each individual symptom points at a different component, and replacing any one of them changes nothing.

The whole check takes twenty minutes with a spanner and a wire brush, and it is the single highest-value thing to do before spending money on an electrical fault.

The mistakes this sheet exists to prevent

  • Cleaning the battery terminals and stopping there. The engine-to-frame strap is the one that usually fails.
  • Judging an earth by looking at it. A connection that looks fine can still have resistance — test it.
  • Refitting an earth onto painted or powder-coated frame, which is an insulator.
  • Replacing a CDI, stator or regulator before checking the earths those components depend on.
  • Leaving a cleaned connection unprotected, so it corrodes again over the winter.

  4. 04Protect the joint afterwards, or it will be back next winter.
