The problem it solves
A liquid-cooled scooter gives no warning that its cooling system is failing until the temperature gauge moves, by which point the damage may already be done. The two things that prevent it — checking the level cold and confirming the fan actually runs — take two minutes and almost nobody does either.
If your machine has no radiator, this sheet does not apply to you and the overheating sheet is the one you want. The two-stroke or four-stroke sheet settles which you have.
Coolant does three jobs: it carries heat, it stops the system freezing, and it stops the inside of the engine corroding. The third is the one that degrades invisibly. Coolant that looks fine can have lost its corrosion inhibitors years ago, which is why changes are recorded here by date rather than by mileage.
The fan test is the other half. On a small machine the fan does most of the cooling in traffic, and a fan that has quietly stopped working is undetectable at road speed and catastrophic in a queue.
The mistakes this sheet exists to prevent
- Checking the level in the reservoir only. The reservoir can look right while the radiator itself is low.
- Opening a hot system. It is pressurised and the coolant is above its atmospheric boiling point.
- Topping up with water repeatedly, which dilutes the inhibitors and the freeze protection.
- Never confirming the fan runs, so the first time you find out is in traffic.
- Recording changes by mileage when coolant degrades by time.
