Chinese scooter overheating and running hot
Air-cooled engines depend on shrouding and oil more than owners expect. A relative test, because the published temperature figures contradict each other.

The problem it solves
An air-cooled engine that runs hot is usually blamed on the weather or on being ridden hard. More often it is missing cooling shrouds, a fan duct packed with debris, oil that is low, or a mixture running lean — all of which are cheap to check and none of which announce themselves.
The plastic panels around an air-cooled cylinder are not styling. They duct air from the flywheel fan across the fins, and as one experienced owner put it, no manufacturer would spend the money on them if the airflow happened naturally. Machines arrive second-hand with those shrouds missing surprisingly often, because they get removed for access and not put back.
Oil matters more than on a liquid-cooled engine too, because in an air-cooled four-stroke the oil is carrying heat away as well as lubricating. A low level is a cooling fault, not just a lubrication one.
And a lean mixture raises combustion temperature directly, which is why the mixture table appears on this sheet as well as on the power and idle sheets. Three symptoms, one underlying signal.
The mistakes this sheet exists to prevent
- Riding a machine with the cooling shrouds left off after a job, which removes the ducting the fan depends on.
- Judging temperature against a figure from a forum. The published numbers contradict each other and conflate oil temperature with head temperature.
- Topping the oil up and considering the matter closed, without asking where it went.
- Treating a lean mixture as a tuning preference. It raises combustion temperature and on a two-stroke it seizes engines.
- Assuming a hot engine after a long climb is a fault. Compare against how hot it used to get on the same climb.

How to use it
- 01Establish when it happens — sustained climbs, slow traffic, or all the time. Each points somewhere different.
- 02Check every shroud and duct is present and clipped down before anything else.
- 03Record how hot it gets on a route you ride regularly, so future readings have something to compare against.
- 04Treat a lean reading on the mixture table as a heat cause, not just a running one.
