Scooter brakes dragging or binding

The problem it solves
A dragging brake is a quiet fault. It does not squeal or fail — it just makes the machine feel slow, heavy on fuel and hot at one wheel, which gets blamed on the engine. And a brake that drags is a brake that is getting hot, which is the mechanism by which it eventually stops working properly at all.
The check costs nothing: get each wheel off the ground and spin it. It should turn several revolutions freely with maybe a light rub, and it should not stop dead in half a turn. Most owners have never done it, which is why a dragging brake usually gets found by a mechanic rather than by the person riding it.
The causes split cleanly by brake type. On a disc it is nearly always the caliper — a piston that is not retracting, slide pins that have seized, or a hose that has swollen internally and is holding pressure. On a drum it is nearly always adjustment or the cable, both of which are easy to see once you know to look.
One cause is common to both and is worth ruling out first because it is free: the lever or pedal not returning fully, which holds the brake slightly applied all the time.
The mistakes this sheet exists to prevent
- Blaming the engine for a machine that feels slow, when one wheel will not spin freely.
- Backing off a drum adjuster to cure dragging without asking why it needed that much adjustment.
- Freeing a seized caliper piston and refitting it without cleaning and inspecting the seal.
- Ignoring a hot wheel after a ride, which is the clearest sign there is.
- Greasing a sticking slide pin with something that swells the rubber boot, which seizes it again.
