CVT belt profile gauge

A drive belt carries its size printed on the back, and that print is usually the first thing to disappear. This sheet lets you recover the two dimensions that matter — top width and included angle — from the belt itself.

Set scaling to 100% or Actual size. Never “Fit to page”.

How to use this sheet

  1. Print at 100% and check the calibration bar measures exactly 100mm.
  2. Take the belt off. Lay it flat with the outer, flat face upward and the toothed or ribbed face down.
  3. Set the belt against the top-width scale and read the width across the widest part of the section.
  4. Stand the belt end-on against the cross-section outlines and find the one whose sides match the taper of the belt. That is the included angle.
  5. Measure the outside circumference with a tape for the length, then order by all three figures.

When to replace it rather than measure it

A CVT belt is a consumable and it fails progressively rather than suddenly. The symptoms arrive in roughly this order: slower acceleration from a standstill, then a top speed that drops off, then slipping under load on a hill, then a rising screech from the transmission case.

Replacing a belt with worn rollers, or the other way round, wastes half the job — the two wear together and the new component takes the load the old one is no longer carrying. Roller sizing card

Why the printed size on the belt may not be the right size

The belt in the machine is not necessarily the belt that left the factory. On a used machine of unknown history, somebody may have fitted whatever was closest and available. Measure the pulleys and the case as well if the belt you take out looks marginal — an undersized belt rides deep and wears the pulley faces.
