Read your engine family number in sixty seconds
The code on your emission label looks like a serial number. It is not. Once you can read it you can identify a machine with no badges, no paperwork and no importer left to ask.

Every powersports vehicle legally sold in the United States carries an emission control information label, and on it is an engine family number. It is the single most precise identifier your machine has — more reliable than the badge, which the importer chose, and more specific than the VIN, which identifies the vehicle rather than the engine.
It looks like a random serial number. It is not. Four separate facts are encoded in it.
First, find the label
It is a small printed label, usually white, silver or yellow, roughly between a credit card and a postcard in size, headed Vehicle Emission Control Information.
On a step-through scooter, look inside the front leg shield or under the seat first. On an ATV, under the seat on the frame. On a UTV, under the hood or the passenger seat. On a go-kart, on the engine shroud or the frame behind the seat. The full list of locations by body style exists because the regulator's own guidance was written for cars and tells you to look under a bonnet.

Four facts in one string
None of that is guesswork. The structure above was derived by testing it against every China-engine row in the EPA database rather than taken from a specification document.
A worked example
Take VGSCC.278RAE, a real code from the register.

Without ever seeing the machine you now know it is a 2027-model-year, street-legal, 278cc scooter sold by Genuine Scooters. Look the code up in the registry and you get the one thing it does not carry: which factory in China actually built the engine.
Three things that catch people out
The letters skip around
I, O, Q and U are never used, because on a label that has to survive years of heat and pressure washing they are too easily confused with 1 and 0. The same four are skipped in VIN model-year codes.
There are two codes on the label
Most labels carry an engine family and an evaporative or permeation family. The engine family is the one with a decimal point and digits on both sides. The permeation family usually has no decimal point and often contains a fragment like PMETAL. Looking up the wrong one returns nothing.
You cannot use another brand's code to find a match
This is the one that wastes the most time. Engine family numbers are issued to the importer, not the factory. Two brands selling the identical machine from the identical factory each hold different codes — verified across the whole registry, zero of 4,858 families are shared between two US brands. To find siblings you work from the factory, which is what the cohorts are for.
What to do with it
Type the code into the lookup. You will get the factory, the model years, the displacement, every model designation the importer filed, and the other American badges built by that factory at that size.
Then photograph the label and the VIN and keep the pictures somewhere that is not the machine. These labels do not become more legible with age, and the moment you need the number is usually the moment the machine is in pieces.
