Your scooter brand vanished. Here is how to find parts anyway.

Importing Chinese powersports vehicles has a low barrier to entry and a high failure rate. When the company on your bodywork disappears, the engine underneath it does not.

The pattern is always the same. A machine that has been fine for years needs one part — a belt, a carburettor, a CDI unit. You search the brand name on the side of the bodywork and find a dead website, a Facebook page last updated in 2016, and a forum thread of people asking the same question you are.

Here is the thing almost nobody stranded in that position knows: the badge is the least durable part of the whole arrangement. The factory that built your engine is very probably still trading, and still building near-identical engines for other American brands right now.

Why so many importers disappear

Importing Chinese powersports vehicles has a low barrier to entry. A company registers, certifies a handful of engine families with the EPA, sells machines for a few seasons, and stops — leaving no parts supply, no warranty and nobody to ask.

The Chinese factories are the durable half of this market. They typically supplied several American importers at once and carried on supplying others long after any individual brand folded. So the question worth asking is not who sold me this but who built it, and who else did they build for.

The method, in four steps

1. Find the engine family number

It is on the emission control label, not the VIN plate — a block of letters, a full stop, then digits and more letters, like VGSCC.278RAE. Where the label is, by body style. If the label has gone, the frame number is the fallback: decoding a Chinese VIN prefix.

2. Look it up

Type it into the registry. You get the factory that built the engine, the model years, the displacement and every model designation the importer filed — useful in itself, because importers often marketed a machine under a different name than the one they certified.

3. Open the cohort

A cohort is one factory at one engine size. It shows every American badge built from that combination, and flags the model years in which two or more brands certified simultaneously — machines built alongside each other are the likeliest to share components. There are 145 such groups in the registry.

4. Measure before you order

This is the step people skip, and it is the one that decides whether the part arrives right. Take the worn component off and measure it. The printable gauges are free — belts, variator rollers, carburettor bores and spigots, wheel bolt patterns, all drawn at true size with a calibration bar.

What is worth hunting, and what is not

Being realistic about the odds saves a great deal of wasted time and postage.

  • Good odds. Engine internals, gaskets, variator assembly, belt, rollers, CDI, stator, regulator. These usually came from the factory as a unit, so a sibling badge is a genuine lead.
  • Measure carefully. Carburettor, exhaust, wheel bearings, brake shoes, sprockets. Frequently sourced separately by the assembler and changed between production runs.
  • Realistically unobtainable new. Bodywork panels, lights, instruments, seat, mirrors, wiring loom. These were usually specified by the importer, and when the importer is gone so is the supply. Breakers and used listings are the only route.

There is one consolation in that last category: because so many of these machines were sold under so many names, a panel that seems impossible under your badge is sometimes sitting on a shelf under another one.

Where the parts actually are

Three places, in rough order of usefulness for a discontinued brand.

Sibling brands that still trade. If a cohort shows your factory also supplied a company still selling parts today, that is your best route — and the reason to work from the cohort rather than the badge.

Dedicated Chinese-parts specialists. A handful of US retailers stock generic and cross-brand parts for exactly these machines. They will generally ask you for measurements rather than a part number, which tells you something about how this market works. One of the larger ones instructs buyers on its own catalogue pages to compare against the part already in the machine and choose the closest measurements — that is the industry's own method, not this site's invention.

Auction and used listings. For bodywork and anything importer-specific, this is usually the only option. Search the sibling badges as well as your own.

If you are still stuck

Two things are worth checking before giving up. First, that you read the code correctly — 8 and B, and 5 and S, are easy to confuse on a weathered label. Second, that the machine was ever certified at all; a great many small imports were not, and those will not appear in any federal record.

And if you find something this registry has wrong, or an emission label somewhere the guide does not list, send it in. Corrections that hold up get made, and credited.
